| Ebisu, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, is the god of prosperous business and fishing. He is usually depicted holding a fishing rod in his right hand and a sea bream in his left. The theme of this kozuka is Ebisu in traditional Japanese hunting attire, sitting on a rock with a fishing line cast. It is probably a scene of Ebisu just before the sea bream gets caught on his fishing line and he is about to pull it up. The artist, Goto Mitsuki [後藤光求], same as Goto Kajo [後藤華乗]. He was the second son of the 14th soke of the Goto family, Mitsumori (Keijo) [光守（桂乗）], and was born in 1785 (Tenmei 5) and passed away in 1851 (Kaei 4) at the age of 67. This kozuka, inscribed Goto Mitsuki (with kao), is elegant piece depicting Ebisu fishing using takabori and zogan-iroe techniques on a shakudo nanko ground with gold-colored borders. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 1997. |
